The St. Clair College Fratmen continue to assemble the best team they can for their inaugural season. Head coach Mike LaChance is pleased with their recruiting class and with up to 105 players at camp later this year he expects a battle at multiple positions. "I think guys are going to have to be ready to compete. They're going to see more competition at their position. If you see what I'm doing at the quarterback position you be ready to go". said LaChance.
One of the players joining the team is WECSSAA all-star and OPFL champ Malcolm Wallace who LaChance says is explosive on both sides of the ball. "But the thing that attracted us most to him was his toughness and willingness to mix it up.”
The Brennan and Essex Ravens grad took a minute to tell Powerplay Sports what he thinks of his opportunity with the Fratmen.
For starters I am very excited and blessed for the opportunity to play for St. Clair this fall. All my former coaches over the last decade molded me into the person and player I am today. Continuing to play this sport at the next level is me showing my appreciation and gratitude to all their effort to me. I consider myself to be a dedicated person, I will always maximize my effort, even through mistakes. To me the football field is more than grass or turf, it’s a place where life lessons are taught if you pay attention enough.
I spent four years at F.J. Brennan high school, and made many memories on and off the field at the school. The most memorable in my opinion would be 2018 AA WECSSAA Jr football championship. I learned real adversity in that game from multiple angles. I had fractured my ankle on the second play of the game and told my coach that unless I’m strapped to a stretcher I am playing the entire game. We were down by 14 with a minute left before half time, and scored before half and I returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. Down by two late in the fourth, we drove down the field to kick a game winning field goal... and we missed. In that moment it felt like my world was over, I tried so hard just to lose in the end. But after reflecting on that game, I realized I just need to work that much harder to prevent it from happening again.
As a first year player I definitely am excited to learn from the older guys on the team like Cody Holmes and Dylan Samuel to get knowledge and a perspective that comes from experience and repetition. The team overall has me very excited with our potential as I feel we are loaded with talent at all position groups. I can’t wait to actually get on the field with the team and start building the team chemistry essential for team success. Big things ahead!
