Medina fills void

With Kari Piiroinen in the Czech Republic for the World Juniors, rookie goaltender Xavier Medina was strong in net for the Windsor Spitfires. The 17-year old got off to a rough start losing in overtime to Saginaw on December 12th and was on the wrong end of a 6-3 decision against Guelph the next night.

However, since then Medina has gone 8-1 while allowing twenty-six goals during that stretch. His development has been a pleasant surprise for Windsor's coaching staff. Piiroinen is expected back in the Rose City Tuesday and returns to a situation that is much different than the one he left in early December.

Head coach Trevor Letowski says, "it's a good problem to have" but didn't say if he'll continue to ride Medina with his team on a five-game winning streak. "Kari is gonna be coming back a better player as well. It's fun to see that we have two young goaltenders".

Letowski feels Pirroinen learned a lot during his trip and expects a battle between the pipes, "they can challenge each other and ya sure it makes it a little harder for me".
